- 5 – Tiny Makopo, dormitory matron at Oprah Winfrey's Leadership Academy for Girls, is arrested for the abuse at the academy of six girls aged 13–14 and one woman aged 23.

- 4 January – Marais Viljoen (91), former State President of South Africa, dies in Pretoria from heart failure.
- 9 January – Elmer Symons, motorcyclist, dies of injuries sustained in a crash during the fourth stage of the 29th Dakar Rally.
- 18 October – Lucky Dube (43), reggae singer, is shot dead during a car hijacking in Rosettenville suburb of Johannesburg.[1]
