2014 Kabul restaurant bombing

On January 17 2014 a suicide bomber detonated explosives at at the gate of the Taverna du Liban, a heavily fortified restaurant in Kabul popular with foreign nationals, including diplomats, aid workers and journalists; two gunmen then entered the building and began "shooting indiscriminately."^[1] 21 people were slain.^[2]

The Taliban immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.^[1]

Casualties

Wabel Abdallah, head of the Afghanistan office of the International Monetary Fund.^[1]
Alexandros Petersen, a scholar of energy and of the geopolitics of the Caucasus and Central Asia.^[2] Petersen had recently joined the faculty at the American University in Kabul.^[2]^[3]
