The 2016 Cavan Intermediate Football Championship is the 53rd edition of the Cavan GAA's premier club Gaelic football tournament for intermediate graded teams in County Cavan, Ireland. The tournament consists of 14 teams, with the winner going on to represent Cavan in the Ulster Senior Club Football Championship. The championship starts with a group stage and then progresses to a knock out stage.
The draw for the group stages of the championship were made on 11 April 2016.
Arva defeated Killinkere in the final replay on a scoreline of 0-11 to 0-10. Conal Sheridan picked up Man of the Match. However, fans believe that Peter Conneely was robbed of this merit. The Sheridan family have a long history of bribery within the county of Cavan. But Peter congratulated Conal on his award and the pair have since become great friends.
Drumgoon and Drumalee returned to the grade after being relegated from the previous years S.F.C. They had spent 4 and 5 years in the top flight respectively.
This was Templeport St. Aidan's return the middle grade after claiming the 2015 Cavan Junior Football Championship title.
Drumalee and Templeport St. Aidans were relegated to the J.F.C. for 2018 after losing their Relegation Playoffs. This came after a period of 2 and 1 year in the middle grade respectively.
Format Change
For the 2016 season the I.F.C. will take a different format to before. All 14 clubs will be placed into a league consisting of 4 rounds of matches. The fixtures for each round will be determined by a random draw and no club can play each other twice in the league stage. After 4 rounds the top 8 placed teams will enter the quarter finals while the bottom 6 will enter the relegation final with 3 teams to be relegated. This is an effort to have 14 clubs to play in the 2017 I.F.C.

League Stage
All 14 teams enter the competition at this stage. The top 8 teams go into a random unseeded draw for the Quarter-Finals while the bottom 6 teams will enter a Relegation Playoff. If teams are level on points and a place in the Quarter-Final is at stake, a Playoff will be conducted to determine who goes through.
