It is the final season for the Dallara GP2/11 chassis package that debuted in 2011. It is also the final season for the current Mecachrome 4.0 Litre V8 normally-aspirated engine package that debuted in the series' maiden season; a new chassis and engine package will be introduced for the 2018 season.[1]

Prema Racing will start the season as the defending teams' champions after winning their maiden title in the series at the Sepang round of the 2016 championship.
