5th Scottish Parliament

Parliament reconvened on 12 May 2016 with the swearing-in of MSPs and the election of the presiding officer and two deputy presiding officers.^[1] Queen Elizabeth II formally opened the fifth session on 2 July 2016.^[2]

Composition

On 12 May 2016, Ken Macintosh was elected as the 5th Presiding Officer, and was therefore required to suspend his party membership, following the tradition that the Presiding Officer is nonpartisan.^[3]
