ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly
The ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), until 2007, the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Organization (AIPO), is an organization founded in 1977, which is grouped with, but formally associated with ASEAN.[2] Its creation was initiated by Indonesia, with the support of other members of the ASEAN 5 founding members.[3]
It met for the first time in 1978 in Singapore. It is a weak, transnational parliamentary assembly that only has consultative powers, and lacks legislative and oversight powers over ASEAN and its members.[2]
It has over 300 members from ASEAN members. Brunei (and previously Myanmar) which does not have a legislature, attend as Special Observers to AIPA.[3] In 2007, it changed its name from the ASEAN Inter Parliamentary Organization (AIPO).[2]
History
The strength of ASEAN is derived from its society. With the result of greater participation among the parliamentarians, an organization which consist of five ASEAN countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand) begun with early visit from Malaysian parliamentary delegation to Indonesia in 1973.
Following the initial contacts, the parliaments of ASEAN Member Countries agreed to hold first meeting in Jakarta to further discuss the realization of the idea to form a parliamentary cooperation forum, and Indonesia was chosen as the host of the First ASEAN Parliamentary Meeting (APM) from 8th to 11th January, 1975.
