Abdul Latif (criminal)
Abdul Latif was an underworld figure in Gujarat and an associate of Dawood Ibrahim. He was based in Ahmedabad and was also politically well connected. He used to wait on tables in gambling dens where he started serving liquor as a teenager.[1] He became a small-time bootlegger and eventually monopolised the illegal liquor business in Gujarat. Latif was wanted for over 40 cases of murder and a similar number of kidnappings and was a suspect in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case.[2]
He was arrested in 1995 in Delhi and was housed at the Sabarmati jail pending trial. In November 1997, Abdul Latif was shot dead by the police in Ahmedabad while allegedly trying to escape.[3] In 2014, Latif's son, Shaikh Arif Abdul Latif, contested in the election against Shanker Singh Vaghela, who was the Chief Minister when Latif was killed. Latif's other son had contested against Vaghela in 2009.[4]
The upcoming Bollywood film Raees is based on Abdul Latif's life.[5]
