Achwa 3 Hydroelectric Power Station, also Achwa 3, is a proposed 10 megawatts (13,000 hp) hydroelectric power project in Uganda.
Location
The power station is near the settlement of Aswa, off of the Acholibur–Gulu–Olwiyo Road, approximately 60 kilometres (37 mi), north-east of Gulu, the largest town in the Northern Region of Uganda.[1] This is approximately 400 kilometres (249 mi), by road, north of Kampala, the capital and largest city of Uganda.[2]
Overview
The power station is one of several mini-hydroelectric power stations planned on the Achwa River in the Northern Region. Achwa 3 is a run-of-the-river hydroelectricity project with an average flow of 65.5 cubic metres (2,310 cu ft) per second and a gross hydraulic head of about 12.5 metres (41 ft).[3] Open bid tenders have been solicited from qualified engineering firms to carry out the civil and electromechanical installation and to "design, manufacture, install and commission turbines and other associated works of the project".[4]
Ownership and funding
Achwa 3 is 99 percent owned by the Africa Renewable Energy Fund (AREF), a US$200 million vehicle created and owned by the African Development Bank to invest in the development stage of renewable energy projects in Sub-Saharan African markets, excluding South Africa. AREF is managed by Berkeley Energy on behalf of the fund owners.[5]
