Adenomere

Adenomere is the functional unit in salivary glands. Adenomeres are secretory subunits of lobules. They consist of all the secretory cells that release their products into a single intralobular duct. Part of developing salivary gland destined to become responsible for function.

An adenomere is composed of:

  1. Intercalated ducts: transport saliva to larger ducts.
  2. Striated ducts: contain a lot of mitochondria responsible for electrolyte and water transport during secreation. Simple, low columnar epithelium line these ducts.
  3. Glandular cells: synthesize glycoproteins.
