Alexander Berghaus (born 9 January 1952) is a German specialist in otorhinolaryngology and a university professor of otorhinolaryngology at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU). Berghaus is known for his works in the field of otorhinolaryngology, head and neck surgery, and especially facial plastic surgery.
Biography
Berghaus studied human medicine at the Saarland University in Homburg, at the University of Bonn and at the Free University of Berlin from 1970 to '76. He holds a license to practice physician since 1978. In 1981 he was approved to doctor of medicine at the Free University of Berlin. Berghaus spent stays abroad for reconstructive head and neck surgery in Lausanne, Chicago and New York from 1981 to '83. In 1983 he got recognition as a specialist of otorhinolaryngology. Since 1985 he has been a senior physician at the Clinic for Otorhinolaryngology, Steglitz Clinic of the Free University of Berlin. In 1986 Berghaus was habilitated at the Steglitz Clinic of the Free University of Berlin.
From 1993 to 2003 he was a director at the department of otorhinolaryngology, face and neck surgery and professor of the department of otorhinolaryngology at the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg. He was dean at the medical faculty there in 1994 and pro-dean from 1996 to '98. Since 2003 he is director at the department of Otorhinolaryngology at the Medical Campus of the University of Munich and professor of otorhinolaryngology at the LMU Munich. During his career Berghaus has trained several otorhinolaryngological specialists and supervised a number of habilitations.[1]
Scientific contribution
In the studies for his habilitation project (1986) Berghaus has worked on prosthetic tracheal replacement and ear reconstruction and other indications for the use of porous polyethylene (PE) in reconstructive head and neck surgery.[2][3] With time, such PE implants have become an alternative to the traditional use of rib cartilage in ear reconstruction with microtia.[4][5] As an alternative to the classical gold implants for lid loading in facial palsy cases, Berghaus developed platinum chain implants for the upper lid (German patent together with Thomas Schrom).[6] With his special interest in nasal surgery and rhinoplasty, Berghaus has investigated on the use of implants for this kind of surgery, and he has developed a number of newly designed, partly patent protected instruments.[7] In 2014, Berghaus organized a European Summit Symposium on rhinoplasty in Munich, together with Fazil Apaydin (Izmir, Turkey).
Since 1982, Berghaus strongly spoke for the use of an epithelialized tracheostomy instead of the classical tracheotomy, and he presented the advantages in papers and scientific films.[8] For raising the voice pitch in male-to-female transsexuals, Berghaus in 1993 elaborated the modified cricothyroid approximation, a surgical technique that since obtained more and more widespread acceptance.[9]
