Alice Fleming, born August 9, 1882 in Brooklyn, New York,[1] was a stout-looking character actress in many films who also enjoyed considerable success on Broadway.[2] She is best remembered as the Duchess, Wild Bill Elliott’s aunt in the Republic Pictures' acclaimed Red Ryder Western features.[3] Incredibly popular at the time, especially with children, the Red Ryder films arguably constituted the studio's best-produced non-singing cowboy series,[4] in no small measure due to a charming supporting cast that also included Bobby Blake (Robert Blake) as Elliott’s Indian sidekick, Little Beaver. When Fleming left the series in 1946, she was replaced by Martha Wentworth.[5]

Decades earlier, Fleming appeared in several silent films, usually playing young society matrons. Most notable, perhaps, was the 20th Century Fox film, His Greatest Sacrifice (1921), in which she played William Farnum's coldhearted and ambitious wife.[6]

Alice Fleming was married to William Day. She died on December 6, 1952 in New York City, New York.[7]
