Andrea Barbato (7 March 1934 – 12 February 1996) was an Italian journalist, politician, author and screenwriter.
Born in Rome, Barbato started his career in 1956 working for BBC.[1] After collaborating with L'espresso and Il Giorno, in 1968 he was employed by RAI and served as speaker for the mid-launch telegiornale.[1][2] In 1971 he began working for La Stampa and later, he became vice-director of La Repubblica.[2] Between 1976 and 1980 he was director of TG2, and in 1982 he became director of the newspaper Paese Sera.[1][2]
In 1983 Barbato was elected to the Chamber of Deputies with the Independent Left.[2] In 1987 he returned to RAI as an author and a host, especially working for Rai 3. During his career he was also author of several books, stage dramas and screenplays.[1][2] In 1992 he won the Nastro d'Argento for the script of Francesco Maselli's A Simple Story.[1][3]
Barbato died from surgery complications because of a malformation of the abdominal aorta. He was married to actress Ivana Monti and had two sons.[1][2]
