Biography
Work
He gained renown as a result of the success of his operas, although other were well-received works. He was direcction of company first time in Santander. After his death, his extensive output was a generally forgotten. His career spanned the majority of the musical areas of the period of the Restoration (1875–1885) Operas Director, reputed orchestral conductor, composer of óperas, zarzuelas, symphonic and chamber music. In 1860 was a director of Teatro de la Zarzuela of Madrid. After a long polemic which delayed its première, Italians operas amounted to its definitive consolidation.
In Zaragoza was confirmed compositor of company of zarzuela, premiere of zarzuela El Castillo feudal. In Madrid he was a master compositor in the company of Teatro del Circo every ages, and premiere Un quinto y un sustituto, Harry el Diablo, Pablo y Virginia, La niña de nieve, en colaboración con Emilio Arrieta y José Inzenga, Un trono y un desengaño. In Valencia he work in ópera, in Teatro Principal, 1882–83. At the same time, he approached the art zarzuela with unequal success. His output, while less than that of his contemporaries Chapí, Gerónimo Giménez and Manuel Fernández Caballero, is of great quality, given the variety of genres which he tackled. where he adopted more modern procedures, within the limitations of the genre. His greatest fame came from opera, especially. On the other hand, he wrote symphonic music with a singular insistence, at a time in which in Spain, orchestral ensembles barely existed. He composed and conducted numerous works, A result of this were his symphonies, revealing a strong assimilation of Verdi and Beethoven's compositional techniques. His most successful works were those with a Spanish character. During his last years he composes various symphonic poems with a clear, nostalgic character, In the chamber-music genre he has left us various works, including quartets, as well as a trio and quintet, composed from markedly classical standpoints, influenced by the world French of composers. He went Italy for study and composed Oratio in Rome as one of the works written.
He worked in the Theatre San Juan of Oporto, Portugal in the 1870s. There he wrote his four operas with premieres. He was a director of Theatre Real of San Juan since 1872. He wrote songs of Nineteenth-Century Spain, A Mi Nazarena with José zorrilla and El Beso del Poeta.
Life Private
Antonio was the father of six children at his death, but only two with more than 18 years. Gonzalo's eldest son was a famous reporter and journalist and wrote some books from Africa, as well as giving lectures. This son and Virgilia were the most famous of this family. In 1890 his daughter Virginia married with Antonio Videgain and in 1892 was born his grandson Antonio Videgain Reparaz
