  • France The French TGV sets a new train speed record. The train, with a modified engine and wheels, reached 574.8 km/h (357.2 mph). The record attempt took place on the new LGV Est line between Paris and Strasbourg using a specially equipped TGV Duplex train. The overhead lines had also been modified for the attempt to carry 31,000 V rather than the line's normal 25,000 V.[1]

  • United States Weekday service begins on T Third Street light-rail line in San Francisco, leading to massive delays in the city's Muni Railway system.[2]

  • China Chinese railway officials launch the 6th large-scale speed up which introduces of high-speed rail service in the People's Republic of China. The new CRH trains are capable of traveling at speeds up to 250 km/h (155 mph) between major cities. Although ticket sales began on April 14, sales have not met railway officials' expectations, leading some Ministry of Railways officials to propose lowering the fares.[3]
