Alejandro Ghersi (born April 30, 1990), better known by his stage name Arca,[5] is a Venezuelan electronic producer,[6] consultant, mixing engineer and DJ based in Dalston, London.[7]

Early life

Arca was born in Caracas, Venezuela into a wealthy family. His father was an investment banker and his mother studied International Studies. His family moved to Connecticut for a time, before returning to live in a gated community, where he was privately educated and had the luxury of piano lessons. He describes his childhood as “kind of in a bubble”, and had difficulty accepting the fact that he was gay.[8] He later attended the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at NYU.[5]

Career

In 2012, he released three EPs on the UNO NYC label: his debut as Arca, Barón Libre,[9] Stretch 1,[10] and Stretch 2.[11]

In 2013, he lent additional production on four songs from the Kanye West sixth studio album Yeezus, in which he also served as one of the three production consultants along with Hudson Mohawke and Young Chop[12] and as a producer on FKA Twigs' EP2.[13] He self-released the &&&&& mixtape for free,[14] and was involved in an audio-visual performance of &&&&& alongside Jesse Kanda, who contributed the visuals, at MoMA PS1 in October 2013.[15]

His debut album, Xen, was released on November 4, 2014 via Mute Records.[16] Arca made significant contributions to Björk's ninth studio album, Vulnicura, released in 2015.[17] He was credited as co-producer of seven of the tracks, and co-writer of two.[18][19]

Arca's second studio album, Mutant, was released on November 20, 2015.[20]

In July 2016, Arca announced on Twitter that a new album would be released later in the year.[21]
