Dr. Augusto Huaman Velasco (September 1, 1924 in Lima, Peru – July 20, 1998); and was a world-renowned physician, philanthropist, humanitarian, statesman, lecturer and scientist. He explored life from the most hidden and deserted areas in the world and especially in the Peruvian Andes. He had seven children, who currently live in Germany, US, Spain and Peru. A Humanitarian by his own nature, he was considered a brilliant and pioneer physician, and a respected intellectual with an active agenda internationally between European countries and Peru. He was country man, with a worldly experience, he would consider himself a Capitalist, with a socialist heart. He disregarded communism as a government option and his views on politics and government has taken him to cooperate Ad Honorem with several governments in Europe and Latin America. Son of a Jurist, Landowner and an avid traveler Dr. Gil Huaman; Dr. Augusto Huaman studied during the golden years in the, then prestigious, "Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe" High School in Lima, Peru. He graduated with honors, in the universally known Escuela San Fernando, medical school of Universidad de San Marcos. Then he followed studies of specialization in Spain and Germany. He received a specialization on Tropical diseases in Complutense University in Madrid in 1942. During those years, Dr. Huaman met Dr. Gregorio Marañon, where He developed an interest in Psychiatric illnesses. Dr. Augusto Huaman became involved in the recently created Institute of Medical Pathology and was extremely interested in the seminal work in the research of tropical diseases. During the mid-1980s, Dr. Huaman earned an especial denomination after an active cooperation at Universitats Frauenklinik, Kiel, Germany, on Pioneer work with Laparoscopic Appendectomy.Dr. Huaman devoted his life to the research of health issues related to extreme poverty, social and ethical issues, geographic tropical environments, and extreme poverty. He was most concerned with the development and proliferation of tropical diseases related to conditions of extreme poverty. Has collaborated and advised governments in health strategies, to prevent epidemics, in Europe and Latin America. Also has been involved with Policy Development and a general strategy for social development programs during the government of President Juan Francisco Velasco Alvarado, since 1968 to 1975. Has been key piece in the creation of social programs of community health systems in Ecuador, Peru and Chile, during the socialist current in the decade of the late sixties. Dr. Huaman has lectured in several Peruvian, Andean and European socialist universities, such as Universidad Federico Villarreal, Universidad de Compostela, Universidad de San Marcos and Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg among others. Dr. Augusto Huaman was cousin of the eminent Pediatrician Dr. Noe Huaman Oyague.
Dr. Noe Huaman Oyague and Dr. Augusto Huaman Velasco, were prominent physicians at the then pilot program Hospital Loayza and Hospital Dos de Mayo. The two cousins were in active cooperation with Dr. Gregorio Marañon y Posadillo.
