Berhane Gebre-Christos
Berhane Gebre-Christos was born in Mekelle, a city in Enderta county, part of Tigray province of Ethiopia on 6 March 1953, he was the Ethiopian Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2010 to 2012. He was also the Foreign Spokesperson for the Tigrayan People's Liberation Front (TPLF) from 1979 to 1988, traveling throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, Canada and the United States and meeting with government officials, media, and the public representing the interests of the TPLF.
Life
Berhane attended the General Wingate High School and subsequently the Haile Selassie I University (now Addis Ababa University) from 1971 to 1974. Berhane joined the TPLF in 1976. From 1977 to 1979 he was responsible for administration and organizing mass organizations for the Front. After serving as Foreign Spokesperson, in 1983 he was elected to the leadership of the TPLF, and between 1988 and 1991 he headed the diplomatic mission in the Ethiopian Peoples' Revolutionary Democratic Front Foreign Relations Bureau.
After the fall of the Derg, Berhane was appointed as Ambassador to the United States, a post he held from 1992 to 2002. Upon returning to Ethiopia, he was appointed State Minister for Foreign Affairs in October, 2010. From 2002 to 2010, Berhane served as Ambassador of Ethiopia to the European Union and Benelux (the Kingdom of Belgium, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the Kingdom of the Netherlands).
Berhane also holds a Masters Degree in International Relations from the University of Amsterdam.
