Bihar Times
Bihar Times ([www.bihartimes.com]) is an internet portal in Bihar, India. It was launched on 8th Nov. 1999[1] with the objective to present information on Bihar specially for non-resident Biharees, at a time when there was little such information available on web sites and the Bihar government did not have a website.
Early successes
Its popularity spread quickly after the site was featured in articles in the Hindu, Hindustan Times, Indian Express, The Pioneer, The Statesman, The Times of India, and India Today. The organization never spent money on advertising; many of the viewers came to the portal by word of mouth. Now this site is being regularly viewed in more than 60 countries and in the month of Nov 2005, this portal recorded its highest-ever number of hits, 33,98,634.
Achievements
- Alexa global ranking: 343,728 (highest among all websites on Bihar)
- This portal has taken initiative in organizing "Global Meet for a Resurgent Bihar".[2] Its global network and popularity helped a lot in mobilizing people living even in other parts of the globe. President of India Dr. Abdul Kalam inaugurated this meet.
- It established the worldwide "Friends of Bihar"[3] network, with more than 3000 registered members spread over 60 countries. Largest network is in USA.
- A special section for development news, "Development Alert," sponsored by UNICEF.
- Conducted electronic seminar, "Poverty in Bihar." Participants included Gerry Rodgers (Director ILO, Geneva), A.U. Sharma and P.K. Jha.
- A large database has been created during different elections held in Bihar. Some newspapers like Hindustan and Hindustan Times used these databases for their print edition on a regular basis. During parliamentary election 2004, a special section "Aiyana"(Development profile of parliamentary constituencies) was published on a regular basis in collaboration with this news portal.
- Former Union Minister and social activist Maneka Gandhi writes a weekly column for the portal.
- Bihar Times joined with Oxfam International as their media partner in carrying "Economic Justice Campaign" in Bihar.
- Bihar Times covered the World Diabetes Summit in Chennai (December 2008).
- Collaborated with 'The Times of India' in 'Times Wellness' publication.(Feb.2009)
- Bihar Times Media Pvt. Ltd. signed a MOU with Hindustan Times Media Pvt. Ltd. for content sharing (Aug- 2009)
- Bihar Times successfully organised 'Bihartimes Conclave 2009' at Hotrel Maurya, Patna on Dec. 19-20 to mark its 10th anniversary.
