Professional wrestling career
Early years and training
One of the first matches Adams was involved in was with PCW in 2007, when on 8 September as Matt Silva he teamed with Jacko Lantern to defeat Adam Brooks and Diaz.[6] He won his first title with PCW, the PCW State Title defeating Danny Psycho on 3 December 2010.[7][8] Subsequently to this he won the MCW Heavyweight Title defeating Slex on 28 January 2012.[9][10]
WWE
NXT (2013–present)
On 17 March 2013, Adams signed a development contract with WWE. He reported to NXT and made his debut as Buddy Murphy at an NXT live event on 23 November 2013, teaming with Sawyer Fulton and Troy McClain against Angelo Dawkins, Colin Cassady and Wesley Blake. Murphy made his televised debut on NXT on 15 May 2014, teaming with Elias Sampson in a losing effort against The Ascension.[11]
In August 2014, Murphy formed a tag team with Wesley Blake. On 14 August episode of NXT, they were defeated in the first round of a number one contender tag team tournament by Kalisto and Sin Cara,[12] later known as The Lucha Dragons. For the rest of 2014, Blake and Murphy lost multiple matches to the Lucha Dragons and the Vaudevillains (Simon Gotch and Aiden English). Blake and Murphy were once referred to as Team Thick in October, but that name was dropped in later episodes.[13][14][15][16] Also in October 2014, Blake and Murphy lost a number one contender tag team battle royal, being eliminated by the Ascension.[17]
On 21 January 2015 episode of NXT, Murphy and Blake defeated the Vaudevillains and quickly challenged the Lucha Dragons to a title match. On 28 January episode of NXT, Blake and Murphy defeated the champions to win the NXT Tag Team Championship, making Murphy the first Australian to hold a championship in WWE.[18] At NXT TakeOver: Rival, Blake and Murphy, now billed simply by their surnames, defeated the Lucha Dragons in a rematch for the title.[19] Following that in March, Blake and Murphy began a feud with Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady, who were intent on capturing the tag titles.[20] Blake and Murphy attempted to woo Carmella on several occasions.[21] On 13 May episode of NXT, Blake and Murphy distracted Carmella during her match with Alexa Bliss, causing her to lose which established them as heels in the process.[22] At NXT TakeOver: Unstoppable, during Amore and Cassady's NXT Tag Team Championship match against Blake and Murphy, Alexa Bliss would come out mid-match and attack Carmella and Amore, ensuring the win for Blake and Murphy and aligning herself with them in the process.[23] After making several successful title defences, Blake and Murphy lost the championships to the Vaudevillians at NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn, ending their reign at 219 days.[24][25] On 18 May taping of NXT, after losing to Shinsuke Nakamura and Austin Aries, Alexa and Blake walked away from Murphy, teasing a split for the team.
Murphy returned to singles action on 1 June 2016 episode of NXT to face Tye Dillinger in a losing effort. An attempt was made by Murphy and Blake to reconcile their differences in a match against new team TM61, however miscommunication between the two resulted in defeat. Murphy was confirmed as a singles competitor once again when interrupting a meeting between NXT general manager William Regal and Shinsuke Nakamura on 22 June 2016 episode of NXT, leading to a match with Nakamura in the main event that he lost. Another attempt to work as a team by Blake and Murphy occurred on 6 July episode of NXT, in a match against The Hype Bros. The two quickly fell apart and began to argue after Murphy tagged himself in, until a returning Rhyno interfered and hit everyone with a Gore but Murphy, who managed to escape.
Other media
Murphy, along with his tag team partner Blake, made his video game debut in WWE 2K16 as a downloadable character and is featured in WWE 2K17.
Personal life
Adams has a background that includes bungee jumping, rock climbing and swimming with great whales.[26] In November 2015, it was confirmed he is currently in a relationship with fellow wrestler Alexis Kaufman, known on-screen as Alexa Bliss.[27][28].
