Candid Austin Teen Magazine is the first magazine published, written, and run solely by teenagers for college-bound teenagers in Austin, Texas. The fourth issue of Candid was released Fall 2008. Candid is a 28-page full-color publication free to all residents of the Austin area.[1]
History
Candid was created in May 2006 by Lisa Gu, Amber Makhani, Helen Wang, and Kae Wang. Working through summer break, the four high school students assembled the first issue of the magazine. With the help of Mandy Grewal and other students, editors sold advertisements and conducted fundraisers to cover the $5,000 cost of printing 5,000 copies.[1]
For its second and subsequent issues, Candid expanded staff to include reporters, school representatives, graphics designers, and advertising representatives.[2]
Staff description
Reporters write stories about Austin or college-related issues that affect teenagers. School representatives coordinate interviews and distribute the final products. Advertising representatives sell advertisements to cover the cost of printing the magazine. Graphics designers design advertisements. Editors design the page layouts, edit and place the stories, tweak the advertisements, contact publishers, contact press, and fill in any leftover gaps. Candid allows all teenagers living in the Austin area to apply for a position on staff via an online application.[3]
Distribution
To adjust to changing media outlets and budget necessities, Candid Teen Austin changed in its 5th issue to an online magazine. Once complete, the magazine will be available at issuu.com.
For previous print editions, school representatives brought stacks of the free magazine to the teachers in Austin-area schools who requested copies. The schools that distributed the first issue of Candid included: Anderson High School, Cedar Park High School, Connally High School, Hendrickson High School, LBJ High School, Leander High School, McNeil High School, Pflugerville High School, Round Rock High School, St. Andrew's Episcopal School, Stony Point High School, Westwood High School, and Westlake High School.[4]
Addition copies were available at the Round Rock Public Library, select Austin Public Library branches, and select Amy's Ice Cream shops. The first issue was also found at BookPeople, select CoCo's Cafes and could be requested via mail.[4]
Press coverage
The production of the first issue of Candid was featured by The Austin American-Statesman, News 8 Austin,[5] KVUE News, The Round Rock Leader, The Daily Texan,[6] and many other media sources.
