Carrie Kipling
Caroline Starr "Carrie" Kipling (née Balestier (39) (1862 – 19 December 1939) was an American woman who was the wife of the British author Rudyard Kipling.[1]
She was born in Rochester, New York to a family descended from Oliver Wolcott. She married Kipling in 1892, shorlty after her brother Wolcott Balestier died. They had 3 children, Josephine (1892–1899), John (1897–1915), Elsie (1896–1976), the only child to survive both parents, who married George Bambridge.
She was widowed in 1936. She died at her home in Bateman's Burwash, Sussex on 19 December 1939. She left an estate valued at (gross) £165486, leaving her house to the National Trust and her husband's writings to the British Museum[2]
A biography by Adam Nicolson was published in 2001 called "The Hated Wife" which discussed somewhat tempestuous relations with her family and Kipling's fans.[3]
In the 2007 film My Boy Jack (film) based on the play My Boy Jack (play) she was played by Kim Cattrall.
