Caroline "Cara" Villarosa Subijano is a Filipino newscaster and former beauty queen and who was crowned Binibining Pilipinas World 1994.[1]
Early life
Her career began in fashion modeling when she won the Supermodel of the Philippines competition during a summer break from her political science and journalism studies at UC Berkeley. She endorsed several products in the Philippines, such as Sunsilk, Creamsilk, and Ovaltine Light.
Binibining Pilipinas - World
After graduating college, Cara competed in the Binibining Pilipinas 1994 competition and won the title of Binibining Pilipinas World. She was preceded by Ruffa Gutierrez, who had placed Second Runner-up to Miss World 1993.
Miss World 1994
As the official representative of her country to Miss World 1994, Subijano placed among the Top 10 semifinalists of the event held in Sun City, South Africa on 19 November.
She spent five weeks in South Africa helping raise millions of dollars with other contestants for the United Nations Project 'Operation Hunger', becoming close friends with Patinya Thongsri (Miss Thailand), and having the privilege of shaking hands with former South African President Nelson Mandela.
Life after Binibining Pilipinas - World
After passing her crown to the next Binibining Pilipinas World, Reham Snow Tago, Subijano continued modeling and became a Board Member of the Professional Models Association of the Philippines (PMAP). She was also chosen to be one of two first CalCarries Models to be sent to Asia, and became the face of the Giordano ready-to-wear fashion in Hong Kong. She had also taken the lead role in several commercials and fashion shows in Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia, and Hong Kong.
Although her career in fashion was flourishing, Subijano decided to fulfill her dream of working in journalism and newscasting. Back in college, she had already started her training as a Public and Community Relations Intern for KRON/NBC Channel 4 and as a Broadcast News Intern for KTVU/Fox Channel 2. She soon became a sportscaster and entertainment anchor for local channels in the Philippines and joined the news team of Sky Cable News, an affiliate of ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation. Two years later, Cara signed up with the Genesis Artists Management Company of Gary and Angeli Valenciano and started doing television and special events hosting.
When ABS-CBN International decided to produce Balitang America, a Filipino-American Weekend News Program, Cara was tapped to become the show's news anchor. Working with the ABS-CBN Company allowed Cara to experience different aspects of the media industry: her anchor position, reporting stints, special events hosting, TV commercial productions, and TV advertising sales. Balitang America Week-end News ended its run after seven years, but Subijano continued to be part of ABS-CBN as she has covered special hosting and anchoring stints in other productions.
Subijano relocated back to California, and has been working in a management role for several companies in the high-tech and medical device industry. She lives with her husband, Ken, and her daughter, Ashley. In her spare time, she keeps in touch with her parents Art and Cynthia, siblings (Ivy, Carlo, Dino, and Kathleen) and friends all over the world.
