The fifth series of the British medical drama television series Casualty commenced airing in the United Kingdom on BBC One on 7 September 1990 and finished on 7 December 1990.[1]

Cast

Overview

The fifth series of Casualty features a cast of characters working in the fictious of emergency department of Holby City Hospital.[2] The majority of the cast from the previous series continue to appear in this series. Derek Thompson continued his role as charge nurse Charlie Fairhead, Cathy Shipton starred as staff nurse Lisa "Duffy" Duffin and Brenda Fricker appeared in the role of state enrolled nurse Megan Roach. Geoffrey Leesley and Ian Bleasdale portrayed paramedics Keith Cotterill and Josh Griffiths. Robson Green played porter Jimmy Powell.[3]

Nigel Le Vaillant, Mamta Kaash, Patrick Robinson, Maggie McCarthy and Eamon Boland joined the cast in episode one as registrar Julian Chapman, senior house officer Beth Ramanee, staff nurse Martin "Ash" Ashford, receptionist Helen Green and social worker Tony Walker.[3] Caroline Webster debuted in episode two as paramedic Jane Scott.[3] Boland left the series in episode ten and McCarthy departed in episode fifteen.[3] Leesley and Fricker chose to leave the series after three years and four years on the show respectively. Leesley made his final appearance in episode five and Fricker departed in episode fifteen.[3]

Tony Walker, Helen Green, Martin "Ash" Ashford, Beth Ramanee and Julian Chapman are introduced.

Paramedics Keith and Jane have their drugs case stolen by drug addicts Melissa and Mike. Mike is admitted to A&E after injecting atropine. A young student, Alex, dies from alcohol poisoning after celebrating passing his exams. An out of control lorry throws a man, Henry Carpenter through an office window. He dies in CRASH. Charlie is depressed after hearing his friend collapsed and died after recovering with a broken leg.

Jane Scott is introduced.

Charlie is feeling low following his best friend's death. Julian is tactless but later apologises. Megan is charmed by social working Tony Walker who saves her as she's being attacked by her neighbour who is neglecting her small son. Two firemen, Ralph and Eddy are injured after a wall collapses on them. Jimmy spends most of the shift looking for a stolen briefcase belonging to Mr Parish, brought in after collapsing. On finding it, he is surprised that it contains women's clothes.

Duffy spots hepatitis B symptoms in prostitute Jenny, with human bite marks. The woman won't take advice and stay. She is later brought in dead on arrival after being beaten up. Megan worries about two homeless teenage girls, Imogen and Nikki, one stabbed in the arm by squatters and the other seriously ill from a paracetamol overdose. Other patients are a tyrannical old mother; a skinhead with a sex-mad girlfriend and a heart patient's husband who's sicker than his wife.

Charlie witnesses a lorry crushing a man on his way to work. He goes with him in the ambulance, but he dies in CRASH. An ex-boxer, Jack uses his old skills on hooligans on a bus but ends up with broken ribs. Beth and Julian clash over the treatment of a drug addict. A hoaxer poses as a doctor to steal tranquillisers. Tony Walker tempts Megan with a trip to Paris. When Ash tells her he's married, she says she already knows.

Keith Cotterill departs.

A girl's legs are crushed after two cars of youngsters race along a dark country road. A father's religious sect opposes dialysis for his daughter, despite the pleas of the mother and an angry Julian. Finally, the father relents. Charlie lets a drunk sleep on a mattress in a cubicle, much to Julian and Ash's disapproval. As another 'drunk' comes in, Charlie sends him to join the other, but Jimmy calls the alarm when they find out he is a diabetic, who's had a hypo. A hospital porter, Harry is treated by Beth after falling ill. As Beth treats him, he arrests and dies in CRASH.

A girl ends up in casualty after being assaulted by a minicab driver. Duffy draws on her own rape experience to advise her. An old woman collapses in the street and Megan and Beth discover she's carrying several thousand pounds in her handbag. Megan spells out to Charlie the risks of his heavy drinking when he brings his companion in who has cut a wrist on broken glass.

A doting grandfather climbs a ladder to retrieve a frisbee from the roof for a young boy. He topples backwards crushing the boy who dies in CRASH. Julian's skills save a knifed taxi driver. Police arrest a patient, Gordon, after his wife's lover, whom he attacked dies of a brain haemorrhage. Duffy finds it tough being a single mum. Let down by a babysitter, she has to bring baby Peter to work.

A man secretly meets his wife's best friend for love on a canal barge but after an explosion caused by a gas leak she is left horrifically burned. An anorexic girl comes in with her bossy mother but overdoses in the department toilets and dies in CRASH. Beth treats a young remand prisoner who has been beaten up and discovers he's also been raped. Duffy's childcare issues continue.

Paramedics Josh and Lily find an old man already dead and his crazed son menacing them with a butcher's knife. Later he threatens Jimmy in the same way before being arrested. The team battle to save Miles, a schoolboy who tried to hang himself at school after being bullied. Beth argues and proves to the paediatrician that a bruised baby is not being abused but has brittle bones.

Jimmy's latest girlfriend, a student nurse, is brought in after a night of drink and drug-taking. Jimmy is suspended after she lies to Julian that he stole the drugs from the department for her. A racist warehouse foreman and a worker arrive after inhaling chlorine fumes but alive thanks to their Sri-Lankan skivvy. A man brings in his difficult mother and asks Julian to end her life.

A teenage girl won't say why she tried to kill herself but her older sister tells Megan their widowed father has been sexually abusing the girl. Julian's weekend 'war games' are halted when he turns up in casualty in camouflage with his partner who has an injured ankle. Diabetic Ash helps a fellow sufferer and Duffy considers joining a nursing agency.

A schizophrenic man arrives after a road accident but it transpires he has murdered his wife's friend. He panics at the sight of a policeman and pulls a gun from a briefcase, taking Megan hostage in CRASH. He insists that a porter (Charlie in Jimmy's uniform) takes out a dead body on a trolley. Megan stays calm but the police and the man's wife's shouts make him panic and fire the gun, wounding Charlie in the chest.

Megan Roach and Helen Green depart.

Lisa Coleman would later play the role of staff nurse Jude Kocarnik from Series 9, Episode 12 to Series 11, Episode 24. Dona Croll would later play the role of staff nurse Adele Beckford from Series 8, Episode 1 to Episode 24. Dominic Jephcott would later play the regular role of cardiac surgeon Alistair Taylor in Holby City between Series 3, Episode 15 and Series 7, Episode 11. Robert Gwilym would later play the role of consultant Max Gallagher from Series 13, Episode 1 to Series 16, Episode 36.
