Christopher Romulo
Christopher Romulo is a martial arts champion and trainer.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]
Professional career
Romulo is a champion Muay Thai fighter,[5][8][9] having won the WKA Super Middleweight North American title in 2010.[3][4][10] Romulo began his career as an amateur in 1996 when he was 21 years of age.[3][4] Romulo's amateur career includes 5 titles, and as a professional he was 13–3 [10 KOs] and won the WKA super middleweight North American title in 2010.[4][11] During his career, Romulo won several Muay Thai titles, including a US National Championship, a North American Championship, and a Bronze medal in Bangkok in the World Cup.[12] Proud of his Filipino heritage, Romulo always entered the ring with the Filipino flag wrapped around him like a cape.[7][13] Romulo retired from active competition at the age of 37 after 16 years in the sport.[3]
Coaching career
Romulo built a training center in Rockaway in 2009.[13] It was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy but has since been rebuilt.[4][8][14][15][16][17][18][19] Romulo owns and operates the training center with his wife Sarah.[3][5][6][10]
Personal life
Romulo was the first in his family to be born in the United States. His father was Carlito Romulo and his mother was Lucita Fernandez Romulo.[13] Romulo grew up in Queens Village.[2][7] Romulo is married to Sarah (a fitness trainer and boxer[9]) - they own and operate a gym and martial arts training centre together.[2] Romulo has two children.[2]
Community involvement
In 2009, Romulo was selected alongside mixed martial arts stars Jason “Mayhem” Miller and Scott “Hands of Steel” Smith as a spokesperson for the American based anti-bullying campaign Bullying...We’re Kickin’ It, which was founded in 2007. Its mission is to “help encourage positive behavior and bring attention to the long-term effects of bullying behavior.” Working with the Bullying...We’re Kickin’ It anti-bullying campaign has given Romulo a chance to work with children who are in the same situations that he was in while growing up.[3][4][20]
Romulo is also actively involved in the Muaythai Preservation Project which provides support for local children through scholarships to train and learn the sport.[21][22][23]
