Clounagh Junior High School is a community based comprehensive school on the Brownstown Road, Portadown, Northern Ireland.
It accepts male and female pupils following primary education. Generally, children attend for three years (from ages 11–14) however, those with special educational needs stay for an extra two years. After the children leave they are generally transferred to either Portadown College or Craigavon Senior High School.
It follows Craigavon two-tier system, commonly called the Dickson Plan, which was established approximately 50 years ago because many people recognised that making crucial decisions about a child's future at the age of 10 was inappropriate. The current school principal is Trevor Canning, formerly Senior Vice-Principal. In 2005, he succeeded Norman Dickson following the retirement of the latter. The school is responsible for a lot of charity work and hosts many activities involving young students such as bun sales and reading marathons.
School facilities
Sports facilities include two grass rugby/football pitches, two all-weather pitches, two long jump sand pits and a concrete throwing circle for shot put events. There is also a dedicated indoors sports hall which can be used as a basketball court when needed. Although sport plays a key role in the school's extracurricular activities, there are a number of other activities which include but are not limited to film, art, computers, library, choir and the school play (every other year).
Curriculum
Clounagh Junior High School offers a wide variate of subjects which are served by approximately 40 classrooms. The school's Art Department is one of the largest and best funded in Northern Ireland. These subjects include: Art and Design, Citizenship, Employability, English, French, Geography, German, History, ICT, LLW, Mathematics, Music, Personal Development, Physical Education, Religion, Science, Spanish, Technology and Design.
