The Coachella Valley Mountains Conservancy is an agency of the State of California. Through its Open Space Protection Program, it buys and keeps land in the Coachella Valley and in the surrounding mountains,[2]:21 both for the protection and conservation of its cultural and natural resources and for the use and enjoyment of the public. It was established by the California State Legislature in 1991.[1][3]:396
The San Jacinto Mountains, Palm Springs, California, are at the western edge of the Coachella Valley.
