District 13 is a United States Coast Guard district located at the Henry M. Jackson Federal Building, in Seattle, Washington. The area is unique in that it deals with varying climatic changes due to the Alaskan winds that blow south and the Columbia River.
Command and duties
Today the 13th is commanded by Rear Admiral Richard T. Gromlich. With 1700 active duty, reserve, and civilian members, the 13th is primarily responsible for maritime safety and security, recreational boating safety, port state control, environmental protection, and port, waterway, and coastal security for the states of Montana, Idaho, Oregon and Washington with an area of over 400,000 square miles of ocean, along with the surrounding rivers and lakes.[2]

Training
Not only does the 13th deal with the nation's largest recreational traffic but it is also home to one of only two Maritime Force Protection Unit (MFPU), which are responsible for escorting America's Trident ballistic-missile submarines to and from their home port. Here is also the home of the National Motor Lifeboat School near Coast Guard Station Cape Disappointment in Ilwaco, Washington. The Advanced Helicopter Rescue School across the Columbia River teaches extreme rescue scenarios at the Tongue Point and Air Station (AirSta) in Astoria, Oregon.
