CodeChef is a non-profit educational initiative of Directi.[1][2][3] It is a global competitive programming platform which supports over 50 programming languages and has a large community of programmers that helps students and professionals test and improve their coding skills.[3] Its objective is to provide a platform for practice, competition and improvement for both students and professional software developers.[4] Apart from this, it aims to reach out to students while they are young and inculcate a culture of programming in India.[4][5]
Initiatives
To foster programming talent, CodeChef has introduced programs such as Go for Gold, CodeChef for Schools, as well as regular monthly contests.
Go for Gold initiative: Go for Gold is a non-profit program launched in 2010 to enable Indian teams to excel at the world finals of the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest, an annual multi-tiered competitive programming competition.[6] The Go for Gold cup will be awarded to the Indian team that finishes at a higher rank than any other Indian team has reached in the history of the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest World Finals.[7][8]
CodeChef for Schools program: CodeChef for Schools aims to stimulate programmers at the grass root level to create a self-sustaining community of technology developers. The initiative hopes to enable Indian students to excel at the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI), one of the five academic Olympiads for high-school students worldwide.[5]
Monthly contests: CodeChef hosts a 10-day-long contest and two short contests every month [9][10][11] - one designed to resemble the International Olympiad in Informatics and the other based on the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest. These competitions provide a contest hosting platform to educational institutions for free. The top two winners of the long contest win cash prizes while the top 10 global teams win tee-shirts.[12][13]
History
In the year 2009, Directi launched CodeChef with a vision to provide a platform for practice, competition and improvement for students and professional software developers across India.[1]
In July 2010, Directi, along with CodeChef, launched the ‘Go for Gold’ initiative to enable Indian teams to excel at the world finals of the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ACM-ICPC).[6][7][8]
In July 2013, CodeChef, along with Directi, inaugurated the CodeChef for Schools program, which is aimed at fostering programming talent at the grass root level to create a self-sustaining community of technology developers. The initiative hopes to enable Indian students to excel at the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI), one of the five academic Olympiads for high-school students worldwide. The competition requires contestants to show basic IT skills such as problem analysis, algorithm and data structure design, programming, and testing.[5]
