Consequence of Sound (CoS) is a Chicago-based online magazine[2] featuring news, editorials, and reviews of music and movies. In addition, the website also features the Festival Outlook micro-site, which serves as an on-line database for music festival news and rumors.

The site was founded in September 2007 by Alex Young—who now has the role of the site's CEO and publisher—and it has a combined staff of over 50 writers, editors, graphic designers, and photographers. Michael Roffman is the President and Editor in Chief, Matt Melis is the Editorial Director, Adam Kivel is the Executive Editor, Philip Cosores is the Deputy Editor, Collin Brennan, Nina Corcoran, and Lior Phillips are Associate Editors, Dominick Suzanne-Mayer is the Film Editor, and Ben Kaye is the News Editor.

Consequence of Sound is listed as one of the most influential music websites by Technorati.[3] In 2010, About.com ranked Consequence of Sound the year's best music blog, based on "Technorati rankings and the online buzz throughout the year".[4] In the Spring of 2014, Style of Sound calculated that Consequence of Sound charted as the No. 2 Most Influential Music Blog.[5]

A popular feature of Consequence of Sound is the Festival Outlook, posting rumors regarding bands playing music festivals. However, it has caused some controversy. In 2009, CoS reported that Paul McCartney and The Killers would headline the 2009 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival prior to its lineup announcement.[6] In 2010, CoS reported that Muse, Jay-Z, and Gorillaz would headline the 2010 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival prior to its lineup announcement. In October 2015, Consequence of Sound broke the news of LCD Soundsystem's impending reunion, and also was the first publication to report on LCD Soundsystem and Guns N' Roses headlining performances at Coachella 2016.

In February 2012, the website launched a long form writing section, Aux.Out. In March 2012, the website launched its first-ever mobile app at South by Southwest.

The website takes its name from the Regina Spektor song, "Consequence of Sounds".[7]
