"Cool for the Summer" was written by Lovato, Alexander Erik Kronlund, Savan Kotecha, Ali Payami and Max Martin, with production held by the two latter.[11] It is a pop[11][12] and pop rock[13][14] song, with a rock edge and an electronic arrangement[14][15] running through a synthesizer beat[16][11] and electric guitar riffs.[17] With this track Lovato returns to her pop rock roots,[18] while breaking new ground for herself with its provocative subject matter.[17][18][19] Thematically, the song is about sexually experimenting with a female lover during summertime.[19] It was noted for being more sexually suggestive than Lovato's previous releases, garnering comparisons to Katy Perry's song "I Kissed a Girl".[8] Tharadjyne Orisma of United Press International noted that the song "makes some pretty racy suggestions".[20]

The track's ambient production consists of a piano melody for the introduction,[17] followed by a buzzing synth beat,[8][17][16][11][19][21] that is accompanied by guitar riffs on the chorus.[17][12][21] Its production was also noted as Lovato's comeback to pop rock music present on her earliest records after releasing her 2011 R&B-infused album Unbroken and 2013's bubblegum pop Demi.[22][23] The song has a moderate tempo of 114 beats per minute. The track is composed in the key of C minor, and Lovato's vocal range spans from the low note of Bb3 to the high note of F5.[24]

Release

Lovato announced the release of "Cool for the Summer" on June 25, 2015, with the single's artwork and the release date, July 1, via Twitter.[25] Emilee Lindner from MTV News commented on the artwork: "The art for the song shows Demi in a strappy suit and faux fur, throwing us the side eye. She gives off an all-knowing, commanding vibe, swinging around her sunglasses without a care."[26]

Although set to premiere July 1, the song leaked one day before its official release date.[11] Following its release, Lovato was accused of copying Jessie J's "Domino" and Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl", with the lyrics "It's okay/I'm a little curious too/Tell me if it's wrong/If it's right/I don't care ... Got a taste for the cherry/I just need to take a bite" being compared to the theme of Perry's "I Kissed a Girl," which was also co-written by Max Martin.[27] In response, Lovato stated the songs sounded nothing alike, and that "I think more than one female artist can kiss a girl and like it".[28]

Critical reception

Yasmeen Gharnit from Nylon calling the song "a blatantly summer song" with "boisterous, cinematic instrumentals and synth beat" that distract from "some straight-out-of-your-middle-school-diary lyrics".[11] Jason Lipshutz of Billboard gave the song a rating of four and a half out of five stars, calling it Lovato's "most self-assured statement to date".[17] Idolator gave an average rating of 7.5 out of 10, writing "from the hook-filled production to the tongue-in-cheek lyrics, it only takes one listen to know that 'Cool for the Summer' is going to be huge."[16] Nolan Feeney from Time stated that "Lovato's sultry vocals and producer Max Martin's Midas touch melt the track's air-conditioned synths into a sweltering, rock-infused banger."[8] Writing for New York, Dee Lockett called it "the most perfectly manufactured Song of Summer maybe ever".[7]

Music video

The music video was directed by Hannah Lux Davis. It was released on July 23, 2015, on Vevo.[29] Christina Garibaldi of MTV deemed the video "seductive, sassy and smokin' hot" and noted the video marked "a new chapter of her career, as she exudes a confidence and sexiness that we haven't seen before."[30] Bianca Gracie of Idolator and Lewis Corner of Digital Spy both thought the video is Lovato's "steamiest".[31][32] Hayden Manders of Nylon wrote that the video "doesn't disappoint, but it somewhat misses the mark" explaining "it's odd that a video for a song about same-sex experimentation features none. You'd have to listen to the lyrics to understand the underlying message of the song because the video shies away from it."[33] New York magazine's Dee Lockett called it "the most sexually liberated video Demi's ever done to go along with its empowering message."[7] The video surpassed 100 million views in October 2015, making it Lovato's ninth Vevo-certified clip.[34]
