Cumbria League is a competitive league at tier 8 in the English Rugby Union System run by the English Rugby Football Union.[1] In the 2011/2012 season the league contains 10 teams competing for promotion to the North Lancashire/Cumbria league.[2] It is currently the lowest competitive league for Rugby Union in Cumbria,[3] with the Cumbria 2 North & West and Cumbria 2 South & East being run as Merit Leagues by Cumbria RFU but with potential promotion and division between these groups.[4] As of 2011, The Cumbria League has 5 first XV teams (Hawcoat Park, Furness, Millom, Silloth, and Windermere) and 4 second XV teams (Carlisle Crusaders 2nd XV, Kendal (2nd XV), Kirkby Lonsdale 2nd XV and Penrith RFC A). Unlike the majority of other leagues, the Cumbria division includes a number of second/A teams.

Currently the winner of the league is promoted into the North Lancashire/Cumbria league while the second placed team faces the runner up from Lancashire (North) for the final promotion place.

Teams in the cumbria league play in both the Cumbria Plate (for the 1st XV clubs) and Cumbria Vase (for the 2nd XV clubs).[5]

2009/2010 Season

Whitehaven were champions of the Cumbria league [6] and were promoted to the N.Lancs/Cumbria league. Millom secured second place but failed in their play off game, losing 32-10 to Didsbury Toc H, so remained in the Cumbria League until the following season.[7]

2010/2011 Season

The 2010/2011 season saw the league with eleven teams with Netherhall entering the league after relegation from North Lancashire/Cumbria league[8] and Whitehaven gaining promotion from the Cumbria League in the 2009/2010 season.[6] Silloth also moved up from Cumbria Shield League rugby with great success . These teams where: Millom, Egremont, Netherhall, Silloth, Creighton, Cockermouth, Gosforth Greengarth, Moresby, Aspatria Eagles, Workington Steelers and Wigton Wanderers

During this season both Moresby and Gosforth Greengarth opted out of the League after realising that extensive rugby playing gave them the hiccups.

The season ended with Millom as Champions,[9] gaining promotion to North Lancashire/Cumbria league, and Egremont in second, the play off spot, who beatTrafford Metropolitan-Vickers, runner up of the N.Lancs Division 1, to gain promotion into North Lancashire/Cumbria league.[10]

2011/2012 Season

The 2011/2012 season saw the league reduced to only ten teams after four clubs left the league; Moresby and Gosforth Greengarth dropped out to the social rugby of the Cumbria Shield League as they were unable to complete fixtures in the 2010/2011 season,[11] and both Egremont, via the play offs.[10] and Millom were promoted [9] to the North Lancashire/Cumbria league.[12] With only three teams entering the league; Keswick [13] and Whitehaven,[14] relegated from the North Lancashire/Cumbria league and St. Benedicts Ravens, who came from the Cumbria Shield League to play competitive Rugby.[15]

This resulted in a very short season, only 18 games instead of the usual 26 for a league of 14 at tier 8 level. Cumbria RFU took the decision to crate their own mini leagues at the end of the season to give clubs a full season of games and to help the club who was to be in the play off spot keep active.[16]

The season ended with Keswick as Champions,[17] gaining promotion back to the North Lancashire/Cumbria league after one season, and Whitehaven in second, the play off spot, who beat Trafford Metropolitan-Vickers, runner up of the N.Lancs Division 1, to gain promotion into the North Lancashire/Cumbria league.[18]

The season top scorer was Harry Hancock with a total of 40 for the season – one short of the club try-scoring record which is jointly held by Michael Bunting and Duncan Lawrence.[19] Hancock won’t get the chance to overhaul the record holders for his club as he’s emigrated to Australia.[19]

The Aspatria Eagles vs Cockermouth game was played on 31 March 2012.[26] The Cockermouth vs Aspatria game was played on 18 February 2012 as part of the Cumbria League regular season, according to Cockermouth and the competitions committee. Aspatria hotly disputed this, and were also ceded the points in a game against Egremont who fielded ineligible players. This result was not included in the final shake up, which, disregarding whether the earlier Cockermouth v Aspatria match counted or not, meant that Aspatria finished second instead of correctly on top. A similar situation happened in the other league which meant Moresby finished top instead of Workington. Both Workington and Aspatria maintain that they should have contested the final.[20] All other games were played on our before 10 March 2012.[23]

The other missed fixtures were between Wigton Wanderers and Gosforth Greengarth, who did not play their home or away fixtures against each other.

2012/2013 Season

The 2012/2013 season saw a new format where the Cumbria league was renamed Cumbria 1 and the creation of two new leagues, Cumbria League 2 North & West and Cumbria League 2 South & East below.[28] This was due to a Cumbria RFU committee, of all Cumbrian rugby union clubs, deciding that all clubs within Cumbria must play their rugby within Cumbria rather than NOWIRUL (North West Intermediate Rugby Union Leagues) for at least the next two years.[29] This decision has brought Hawcoat Park and Windermere in the Cumbrian League structure from North Lancashire 1.[30] As well as the second and third XV's of all cumbrian clubs that played in the NOWIRUL 2011/2012. Those teams were: Penrith (second and third XV's), Kendal (second and third XV's), Kirkby Lonsdale (second and third XV's), Carlisle (second XV), Upper Eden (second XV), Millom (second XV), Furness (second XV), Hawcoat Park (second XV) and Keswick (second XV).[31] Also the clubs that competed in the Cumbria Shield League 2011/2012 entered the competition, these were: Moresby, Gosforth Greengarth, Whitehaven (second XV), Egremont (second XV), and Carlisle (third XV).[32]

Ten teams competed in the league, including four second XV sides. The competing teams were Carlisle Crusaders 2nd XV, Furness, Hawcoat Park, Kendal (2nd XV), Kirkby Lonsdale 2nd XV, Millom, Netherhall, Penrith RFC A XV, Silloth and Windermere. Hawcoat Park were crowned champions after winning their first 13 games, out of the total 18 for the season, by which time they were unable to be caught by other teams in the league.[33]
