DZSR (918 AM), known as Sports Radio 918, is an AM radio station owned and operated by the Philippine Broadcasting Service-Bureau of Broadcast Services (PBS-BBS), an attached agency under the Presidential Communications Operations Office based in the Philippines. Credited as the first and the only sports radio station in the Philippines and the Southeast Asia, Sports Radio 918 broadcast sports programs that catered to sports aficionados and fans in the country, as well as covering significant sports events in the country, as well outside the Philippines.
The station's studio is located at 4th Floor, Media Center, Visayas Avenue, Barangay Vasra, Diliman, Quezon City, and the transmitter is located at Malolos City, Bulacan. DZSR operates daily from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m (Mondays To Sundays).
History
DZSR was formerly known as DPI Radyo 2 during martial law. On May 10, 1986, Sports Radio was established under the leadership of former actor Jose Mari Gonzales who took over as the Interim Director of the Bureau of Broadcast Services (former name of PBS). Gonzales ordered that all BBS radio station will give their respective identites. DZFM was converted at that time as a news and information station covering sports developments in the country.
Before DZFM was rebranded as Sports Radio, it was then-known as Radio Sports which is just a segment of the government radio station DZFM. Reynaldo "Dado" Roa was the first station manager, and at the time, the first staff of DZFM was composed of sports writers and reporters from the Radio Sports department and radio newscasters of the said station. DZFM, later renamed their call letters to DZSR on 738 kHz, however the station's callsign was reverted back to DZFM as a courtesy to the original owner of the frequency, Frederick Marquardt, an American national who donated the 738 kHz frequency to the Philippine government.[1]
On March 1, 1996, 5 years after Marquardt's death, Sports Radio's frequency was moved from 738 kHz (now occupied by Radyo ng Bayan) to 918 kHz and changed their call letters back to DZSR under Memorandum Order No. 329 (Presidential Order No. 293)[1]
On February 1, 2010, it changed its callsign to DWSY (wherein the "SY" means Sports & Youth), as they expanded their programming from sports-related shows to youth-oriented programs. The youth programs of DWSY named "Youth Service" usually air on Saturdays. At the end of 2010, DWSY has changed back to DZSR.
Programming
DZSR is a radio network that focuses primarily on sports programs and coverages. Known as the first sports radio station in Southeast Asia. The station is dubbed as "Institution in Philippine Sports Broadcast." and/or "Your one and only Sports Connection--the home of Philippine National Athletes."
The station covers the Palarong Pambansa, Southeast Asian Games, the Asian Games, and the Olympic Games on a limited basis such as reporting and covering important events. It is the former home-broadcaster of the Philippine Basketball League and the Radyo PBA, covering the Philippine Basketball Association, before Radyo5 (TV5) took over the radio rights. DZSR Sports Radio 918 kHz. is one among 32 Network stations of the PBS-BBS throughout the country, with DZRB-Radyo ng Bayan 738 kHz. in Metro Manila as its 'flagship' station. DZSR was also known for its blow-by-blow and pedal-by-pedal radio coverage of the cycling events in the country including Ronda Pilipinas and Tour of Marboro.
DZSR Sports Radio boasts of a variety of programs with originally designed formats that exclusively cater to respective sets of sports enthusiasts, notably "Sports and Science" every Monday from 3:15 to 5 p.m., "Chess On-Air," Fridays, 11:00-12:00 nn—a program which features 'live' and actual on-air chess-duel between listeners 'by phone' utilizing a system called 'chess notation.' These, outside of other programs which focus on particular sports, i.e. 'Hoop-Talk,'Boksing-sport Lang,' 'The Scene Around,' 'Sports Chat,' 'Football Connection,' 'Cycle Lane,' 'MMA Fight News Hour,' and programs which share the latest local and international sports news and issues like the 'Sports News Roundup', 'POC-PSC Forum' 'Paralympic Hour,' Isport-Isyu-Balita,' 'Philippine Sports Writers' Association Forum,','NSA Corner' and 'Radyo Magasin,'
Among its featured programs are: 'Dream Date,' every Monday, 8:30-10:00 p.m., 'Saturday Mid-Evening with the Beatles,' ,' 6:00-10:00 p.m. which features not only the songs of the British pop group but also the stories behind the songs, 'Saturday Jam,' 'Sunday Elvis Presley Special, a 'feel-good' program, 'Celebrating Life' every Sunday, from 6:00-8:00 a.m.followed by another early Sunday toast-- 'Sunday Sports Spotlight'
At present, the current station manager of Sports Radio 918 is Rick Yap Santos. Aside from Yap Santos, the on-air personalities of the station are Judith Caringal, Benjie Castro, Anne Camua-Viñas, Ria Arevalo, Cecille Quimlat, Peter Paul Patrick Lucas, John Mogol and Aaron Bayato.[1]
