Da Marino Ristorante Italiano is a New York City Italian restaurant founded by chef Pasquale Marino.
The Restaurant
Da Marino was founded by Pasquale Marino, an Italian chef who learned his craft in Calabria, Italy, with a career history that also includes chef positions in Germany, France, and Finland. The ingredients for the dishes at the restaurant are all imported from Italy, excepting vegetables grown in the chef's own Connecticut garden.[2] The restaurant is located on West 49th Street near Times Square in Manhattan.[3]
It has been described by actor Chris Noth as, "right in the heart of the theatre district and very much old New York. It's a neighborhood of friends and artists who come in to taste Pasquale Marino's southern Italian food. His mussels are incredible. Or sometimes he'll say, 'I'm inspired, let me just make this dish for you.' Pasquale is from Calabria, very spirited and truly the captain of his ship. Yet, sometimes someone will get on the guitar and just start singing."[4] It is also known for its restroom—Italian Renaissance-themed rooms filled with Italian design and art, which have been voted among the best restaurant restrooms in the United States.[5] In addition, it is known for the live music of its piano bar.[6]
Patrons and film settings
Anthony Papa said of the restaurant in 2013: "One of the hottest places around is Da Marinos, an Italian restaurant/piano bar that sits smack in the middle of the theatre district of Times Square section of Manhattan." He also described the place as a favorite haunt of "celebrities", citing public statements from people like Mario Lopez, and naming frequent patrons from various television series, other actors, and famed musicians who sometimes take to the piano to spontaneously entertain the crowd like Sugar Hill Gang, Noth, or Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones. The restaurant has also been the site of fashion shoots for publications including Glamour Magazine, and was a featured location in two episodes of Sex and the City.[2][7] The restaurant was also a setting for Exiled: A Law and Order Movie, where the creators of the film Charles Kipps and Noth first came up with the idea for the movie.[3]
Charity work
The restaurant holds an annual fundraising event in its dining room in support of Encore Community Services, which supports the homeless, seniors, and others in need.[2]
