Daniel Rioli (born 16 April 1997) is a professional Australian rules footballer playing for the Richmond Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). He is the fourth in the Rioli family to play in the AFL, following in the footsteps of uncles, Dean, 1982 Norm Smith medalist, Maurice, and 2015 Norm Smith medalist Cyril.[1]

Early life and junior career

Rioli grew up in the Tiwi Islands of the Northern Territory.[2] He played junior football with the Darwin-based St Mary's Football Club in the Northern Territory Football League (NTFL).[3]

He moved away from home to Victoria at age 14 where he boarded at St Patricks College in Ballarat.[4] He played in the school's victory in the 2015 state schools championship.[5]

In 2015 he played nine matches for the North Ballarat Rebels in the TAC Cup including a four goal performace in the club's qualifying final against the Geelong Falcons.[2]

Rioli played representative football for the Northern Territory in the 2015 Under-18 championships where he appeared in three matches for the side.[3][2] He went on to play as part of the Under-18s Allies in a match against the AFL Academy held prior to the 2015 AFL Grand Final.[2]

At the 2015 Draft Combine he recorded impressive results, finishing second in the 20 metre sprint and first in the 30 metre repeat sprint tests.[2]

AFL Career

Rioli was drafted by Richmond with the club's first selection and the 15th pick overall in the 2015 national draft.[6]

He made his AFL debut in Round 1 of the 2016 AFL season in a victory against the club's traditional rival Carlton at the MGC.[7] Rioli kicked his first career goal in his next match, a Round 3 loss to Adelaide.[8] He won nomination for the 2016 AFL Rising Star award after a 16 disposal, four tackle and two goal performance in the club's Round 22 loss to St Kilda.[9] Rioli finished his debut season after playing 18 matches and kicking a club sixth-best 13 goals.[8] He also finished ranked sixth at the clubs for tackles.[10] He was awarded the Cosgrove-Jenkins Award at the end of the season as Richmond's best first-year player.[11]
