Daniel "Danny" Lopez (born May 1974) is the Chief Operating Officer of Blippar, the leading visual discovery platform that uses augmented reality and artificial intelligence through smartphones and wearables. Prior to this role, Lopez was the British Consul General to New York and Director General of UK Trade & Investment in the United States between 2011 and 2016. When Lopez was appointed in 2011 he became the youngest ever British Consul General to New York. He was succeeded by Antonia Romeo in July 2016.[1]
Career Overview
From 2006 to 2009, Lopez served as Managing Director, Marketing & Communications at UK Trade & Investment, where he was responsible for delivering a new marketing strategy to promote the UK economy internationally.[2] Previously, Lopez worked at Barclays Bank for ten years, where he held a number of senior international positions, including: Head of Global Inward Investment in London, Director of Business Banking USA in New York and Business Development Director in India.[3]
From 2009 to 2011, Lopez worked for the London Development Agency, the Mayor of London’s economic development arm, as Group Director for Business Support and International Promotion.[2] During this time, Lopez was responsible for creating London & Partners, London's promotional agency for business, visitors and students and was its first Chief Executive Officer.
During Lopez's tenure as HM Consul-General, Lopez hosted TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge during their visit to New York in December 2014.[4][5] With responsibility for growing the commercial relationship between the UK and the US, Lopez actively promoted the expansion of high-tech US startups into the UK,[6][7] and facilitated collaboration between the tech industries of the two countries.[8]
In August 2011, Danny Lopez became an honorary trustee for BAFTA New York. In addition, since November 2013 Lopez has also been a Fellow at the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufacturers and Commerce (RSA).[9]
Personal
Born in England and brought up in Spain, Lopez holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in economics and a master's degree in international economics and finance from the University of Essex[2] and is fluent in both English and Spanish.[3] In 2012 he married his Australian fiancée, Susan Grieve.[10][11]
