"Dark Entries" is a song by English gothic rock band Bauhaus, released as a stand-alone single in January 1980 by record label Beggars Banquet.[1]
Content
"Dark Entries" showcases the guitar playing of Daniel Ash and tight rhythm section of David J and Kevin Haskins. The lyrics deal with the song hero's decadent vision of the modern world, with a main focus on prostitution, in a somewhat decrepit atmosphere. Dave Thompson of AllMusic writes that the song was outside of the band's normal reputation, being "far punkier" and played at a "breakneck pace". A storm of feedback and percussion starts the song, continuing for 45 seconds before vocalist "Peter Murphy finally unveils one of his most breathless vocals."[1]
Release
The single was released three times: as AXIS3 (original 4AD imprint), AD3 on 4AD records and BEG37 on Beggars Banquet. The sleeve art, showing a painting by Paul Delvaux, was very slightly different on the Beggars Banquet release, and due to the change of names of 4AD, some editions on public sale contained one imprint of the disc with a different imprint of the cover.
Legacy
In a feature for The Quietus, Mick Mercer included "Dark Entries" at number 4 on his list of "The Thirty Best Goth Records of All Time".[2]
"Dark Entries" was covered and released by singer Jan Linton as (dr jan guru) in 2003. Additionally, the band Hole used the riff of the song for their song "Mrs. Jones" on their first album, Pretty on the Inside (1991).
