His specialty at that firm was medical malpractice and insurance law. Nomination to district court

On April 5, 2016, President Obama, on the recommendation of United States Senators Mike Crapo and Jim Risch, nominated Nye to serve as a United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Idaho, to the seat vacated by Judge Edward Lodge, who took senior status on July 3, 2015.[5][6] On June 21, 2016 a hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee was held on his nomination.[7] On July 14, 2016 his nomination was reported out of committee by voice vote.[8] His nomination is now pending before the full Senate.

Idaho Senators Mike Crapo and Jim Risch have indicated that if Nye is not confirmed in the 114th Congress, they will recommend him to President Donald Trump for renomination in the 115th Congress.[9]
