Eben Christopher Upton CBE[4] (born 5 April 1978) is a technical director and ASIC architect for Broadcom. He is also a founder and former trustee of the Raspberry Pi Foundation, and now CEO of Raspberry Pi (Trading) Ltd., the wholly owned subsidiary which runs the engineering and trading activities of the Foundation.[5][6][7][8] He is also responsible for the overall software and hardware architecture of the Raspberry Pi device.[9][10]
Education
Upton completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physics and Engineering in 1999 at the University of Cambridge. He went on to do the Cambridge Diploma in Computer Science graduating in 2001.[11] After his diploma, Upton went on to study for a Doctor of Philosophy degree in the Computer Laboratory, University of Cambridge.[12] After finishing his PhD he completed an executive Master of Business Administration at the Cambridge Judge Business School[13] while working in industry.
Career
Prior to working at Broadcom, Upton was Director of Studies in Computer Science at St John's College, Cambridge with responsibility for undergraduate admissions and organising teaching for St John's undergraduate students on the Computer Science Tripos.
He has been a visiting Researcher at Intel Corporation,[14] Founder and Chief Technology Officer at Ideaworks3D and a Software engineer at IBM.[15]
Publications
Upton has published several books and papers including the Oxford Rhyming Dictionary with his father Clive Upton.[16] With Gareth Halfacree he co-authored the Raspberry Pi User Guide.[17] During his academic career, he co-authored several peer-reviewed scientific papers[18][19][20] on mobile services,[21] Human–computer interaction (HCI),[14] bluetooth[22] and data dependency graphs.[23]
Awards
Upton has won a number of awards including the MIT Technology Review TR35 world's top 35 innovators under the age of 35 in 2012[1] and the Royal Academy of Engineering Silver Medal.[2]
Upton was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2016 Birthday Honours for services to business and education.[24]
Personal life
Eben Upton is the son of Clive Upton and is married to Liz Upton.[3]
