Edition Records is an artist-based, European indie record label. It was founded in 2008 by pianist/composer Dave Stapleton and photographer Tim Dickeson.[1]
Background
In 2008, pianist and composer Dave Stapleton and photographer Tim Dickeson launched Edition Records as a new label for jazz, contemporary composition and improvised music.[1][2] As of December 2014, the catalogue consists of 52 recordings.[3] In 2013 the label launched Edition Classics to focus on new music and chamber music from international ensembles and soloists. The label is distributed in the UK by Harmonia Mundi. The label is known for its "accessible adventurousness"[4] and rigorous quality control.[5] The label is also praised for its ability to spot innovation and potential winners.[6][7]
Notable artists
Tim Garland, Kenny Wheeler, Norma Winstone, Marius Neset, Jasper Høiby (with Phronesis), Ivo Neame, Geoff Eales, Mark Lockheart, Martin France, John Taylor, Kit Downes (with Troyka), Olavi Louhivuori, Daniel Herskedal, Alexi Tuomarila, and Robert Mitchel.
Edition Records Festival
The first Edition Records Festival was held at London's Kings Place in September 2011 and was a notable success. Sebastian Scotney in London Jazz News wrote "Marius Neset's fiery quartet on the final gig of its UK tour giving a sell-out audience the ride of its life. Anton Eger in particular was playing as if his life depended on every touch of a cymbal. Inspiring."[8] Further festivals were held in 2012 and 2013. At the 2013 festival, Edition launched its classical label Edition Classics.[9] The first release on this label was 'Vibrez' by Cellophony, an octet of eight cellists, which received critical acclaim.[10]
