Edwards Number Eight
Edwards Number Eight was a nightclub in Birmingham, UK. It was located on Lower Severn St between New Street Station and The Mailbox. Originally part of Eddie Fewtrell's group of clubs it is best remembered for the period from 1987 onwards when it became a purely rock and alternative music club.
Background
Over the years the club has hosted many famous bands such as Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, and Rage Against the Machine. It was destroyed by a fire in the early hours of November 12, 2006, whilst the club was open. The building was evacuated and there were no casualties, with only one member of staff being treated for smoke inhalation.[1] The building had recently received a new fire certificate.
There have been various fund-raising projects including T-shirt sales, requests for donations and a sponsored zombie walk through Birmingham town centre.
Following the fire a few temporary nights were arranged in a nearby pub in (and called) Gosta Green, with an alternative longer-term residency then being established in The Newt pub. Edwards No8 changed its name to EDDIES and from until June 2014 was located on Gough Street.
A local newspaper ran a news item claiming that the club is to re-open in its old venue following extensive re-building work, however this has not been confirmed by the club's management.[2]
Being informed of the 'Sale of the Building' without any knowledge that this had happened, EDDIES was told that they were Closed on June 4th 2014, but now Owner (Colin Wall) of EDDIES Rock Club went out to find a suitable venue to re-home the Club.
As of 5 July 2014 EDDIES Rocks the Tunnel Club on Livery Street, Birmingham, B3 1HL.
