Elaine Tarone

Elaine Tarone is a professor in the Second Language Studies Program at the University of Minnesota, and the director of the university's Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA). Her research focuses on sociolinguistic factors affecting second-language acquisition,[1] and she is particularly known for her work on interlanguage variation. She was the first person to publish a paper on the subject of interlanguage phonology, and she was also first to publish on the subject of strategic competence in second-language acquisition.[2] Tarone is the past editor of the journal Applied Linguistics and the past president of the American Association for Applied Linguistics.[2]
