Ellis Hicks

Ellis Hicks or Sir Ellis Hicks[1] (c. 1315[2] – c. 1390) was an English knight. He was known for fighting in the Battle of Poitiers.[3]

Relation to Hicks-Beach and other Hickses

It is speculated that Edward Hicks-Beach and other 19th and 20th century English politicians are descendants of Sir Ellis.[4]

Through genealogical charting, many famous people such as Elias Hicks are found to be descendants of Sir Ellis.

Knighthood

Hicks was knighted at the Battle of Poitiers for bravery in capturing a set of colors from the French.

Family

Ellis' son was John Hicks of Tortworth.[5] and his great grandson was Baptist Hicks, 1st Viscount Campden. Ellis Hicks is a direct paternal ancestor of Robert (James>Baptist>Thomas>John>Ellis) Hicks who immigrated to Plymouth Colony, Massachusetts, USA, on "The Fortune" December 9, 1621, and as such is an ancestor to many of the American Hicks.[5]
