Throughout childhood and her teenage years, Emma was raised predominantly by her father. After her parents separated, Blackery's mother went on to have two more children, Febe and Travis.[3]

Blackery grew up listening to Michael Jackson and Madonna[3] and taught herself to play guitar at the age of twelve years old after discovering music by Busted, McFly and Green Day.[5] She would later cite Good Charlotte, blink-182, The White Stripes, Placebo, Paramore and Twenty One Pilots as inspirations for her own music.[6]
