The company was created as a subsidiary of New Communications ILEC Holdings by Verizon in 2009 and sold on July 1, 2010 to Frontier.
The service region of Frontier Communications of the Southwest includes largely rural customers served by Verizon California as well as customers originally served by Contel through Contel of California. This company had been merged into GTE California in 1993.
