George Ernest Bell (November 21, 1883 – November 16, 1970) was a provincial politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1944 to 1963 sitting with the Social Credit caucus in government.
Political career
Bell ran for a seat to the Alberta Legislature as a Social Credit candidate in the electoral district of Gleichen for the 1944 Alberta general election. He ran in a hotly contested three way race defeating incumbent Donald McKinnon taking just over half the popular vote.[1]
Bell ran for a second term in the 1948 Alberta general election. He ran in a two way race against Independent candidate Jonathan Wheatley easily defeating him with a near landslide majority to return to office.[2]
The 1952 Alberta general election would see Bell run for his third term in office. He ran for re-election in a three way and despite losing some of his popular vote managed to win easily.[3]
Bell ran for a fourth term in office in the 1955 Alberta general election. He ran in a hotly contested two way race against Liberal candidate Carman Ellis. Bell held his seat defeating Ellis by 128 votes.[4]
Ellis would challenge Bell for the second time in the 1959 Alberta general election. This time Bell would win a landslide majority to earn his fifth term while Ellis finished a distant third place in the three way race.[5]
Bell retired from provincial politics at dissolution of the Assembly in 1963.
