Grundtvig International Secondary School is a Nigerian independent boarding school in Oba, Anambra State, located just about twenty minutes’ drive from the Asaba Airport. It is named after Danish philosopher N. F. S. Grundtvig and is built upon his folk high school education-for-life principles for education. It educates boys and girls 12 to 18 years old and was founded in 1998 by Dr. Kachi E. Ozumba (1942–2011).The school has repeatedly featured among the top ten performing schools in Nigeria based on its West African Examinations Council (WAEC) results, and was ranked fifth in Nigeria in 2014.[1]

The School is a centre for the American Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and a centre for the Cambridge IGCSE. It has consistently performed excellently in the international examinations. The School is also a popular enculturation hub for Nigerians in diaspora who send their children to the School to learn more about their culture and roots.[2]

"If the school really is to be an educational institution for the benefit of life, it must first of all make neither education nor itself the goal but the requirements of life." - N.F.S. Grundtvig (1783-1872)

Overview

The School is owned by the Grundtvig Movement of Nigeria, a non-profit non-governmental organization (NGO) registered by the Federal Government of Nigeria under the Land (Perpetual Succession) Act Cap. 98, committed to the practice, propagation and development of “Education for Life” in Nigeria. This is education that seeks to equip students not only to make a living but to live lives useful and satisfactory to themselves, their community and nation. It thus facilitates enlightenment, self-discovery, cultural awareness and active citizenship, among other values; and differs from the one-sidedly bookish and examination/certificate-oriented education prevalent in society today.

To achieve this, the Grundtvig International Secondary School operates an Awareness Curriculum that complements its Academic Curriculum. This approach to education is based on our rich tradition and the educational philosophy of N.F.S. Grundtvig (1783-1872) whose ideas have also given rise to the Danish folk high school and efterskole movements, and have influenced and given rise to many other similar educational movements across the world.

"For all letters are dead even if written by fingers of angels and nibs of stars, and all book knowledge is dead that is not unified with a corresponding life in the reader." - N.F.S. Grundtvig (1789-1872)

The School campus is on 10 hectares of securely-fenced land. It is a vibrant community of its own with staff quarters, students’ hostels, classrooms, workshops, laboratories, sports facilities, auditorium, medical centre, administrative block, etc. The School is regarded as the best independent secondary school in the state, based on student performance, infrastructures and student satisfaction; and one of the best in the country.

The Board of Trustees of the Grundtvig Movement oversees the operations of the School through the school principal.

It is located near major cities like Asaba, Nnewi, Onitsha, Owerri and Port Harcourt in Oba, Idemili local government area of Anambra state, Nigeria, in West Africa.

Mission Statement

Our mission at the Grundtvig International Secondary School derives from our traditional education and the philosophy of Bishop N.F.S. Grundtvig of Denmark.

It is to provide Education For Life.

We recognise certificates but we do not glorify them.

Instead, we assist students to rediscover themselves and to develop a sense of real selfworth, merit and ability. This is the result of the education we give.

Our criterion of success therefore is NOT the number of students we graduate, but the number of our graduates that are living useful and satisfactory lives to themselves, to their communities and to the nation.[3]
