HDNet Movies is an American digital cable and satellite television network owned and operated by HDNet LLC. Launched by founder Mark Cuban in 2003 as a spin-off of HDNet (now AXS TV), the network features theatrically released films and documentaries, which are presented in high definition and without commercial interruption or editing for content.[1] Programming showcases a wide variety of films including Academy Award winners,[2] action films, scifi films,[3] westerns,[4] and more.

Programming

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Star Trek in 2016, HDNet Movies aired a marathon of films from the franchise on Memorial Day, May 30, 2016 which featured Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, and Star Trek: Insurrection.[5]

On July 4, 2016, HDNet Movies aired a 24-hour western movie marathon that featured classics such as The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean starring Paul Newman, Bad Day at Black Rock starring Spencer Tracy and Robert Ryan, A Big Hand for the Little Lady starring Henry Fonda, Hombre starring Newman, Cimarron starring Glenn Ford, and more.[6]

In July 2016, HDNet Movies presented its first-ever celebrity-hosted program when Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Graham Nash of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young hosted Graham Nash Presents 9 Days of Rock Docs. The television event featured two rock music-themed documentaries in primetime across nine nights accompanied by hosted wraps and stories from Nash about the artists featured in the documentaries.[7] The marathon included 13 different documentaries, several of which were television premieres. Among them were The Allman Brothers Band: After the Crash, which focuses on the group's career after the death of founding lead guitarist Duane Allman; Rush: The Rise of Kings, about the Canadian prog-rock trio's path to stardom; Eric Clapton: The 1970s Review, which delves into the first decade of the guitar legend's solo career; Van Morrison: Another Glorious Decade, a documentary about the lauded Northern Irish artist's music from 1977 to 1987; and Bob Dylan: In & Out of the Folk Revival, which takes a look at the influential singer/songwriter's emergence as a folk icon.[8]

The network celebrated The Master of Suspense Alfred Hitchcock's birthday with a 48-hour marathon Aug. 13 and 14, featuring 17 of his films including Vertigo, Psycho, Rear Window, The Man Who Knew Too Much and The Birds, among others.[9]

On Oct. 3, 2016, HDNet Movies announced Dan Rather will host a movie marathon featuring politically-themed movies on Sunday, Nov. 6, the weekend before Election Day. Rather will film wraparound vignettes that will run throughout the marathon as he recounts his experiences surrounding past Presidents and presidential elections. Movies airing as part of the marathon include Welcome to Mooseport, True Colors, The Sentinel, The Ides of March, Primary Colors, In the Line of Fire and Bob Roberts[10]
