Hannah Wants (born Hannah Alicia Smith in 1986,[1]) is a British DJ from Birmingham and former professional women's football player.[2] She has toured throughout the UK, as well as in the US, and had appearances at Ibiza.[3]
Professional football career
Prior to her musical success, she played on the youth teams [4] and professional teams for Women's Premier League side Aston Villa L.F.C., and was on the England women's national football team for over a decade.[5] She was a striker on the Aston Villa team and played from U10 through to the senior team level.[6] She scored a hat-trick in her debut for Villa Ladies, enabling the team to come back from being down 0-2 at Liverpool to win the game 3-2.[6] She scored a team-leading eight goals in the 2003-2004 season, when Aston Villa LFC won the Northern Division title.[7]
DJ career
Her DJ breakthrough came in 2010, when she was asked to fill in for a DJ at Es Paradis.[8] Wants was named "Best Breakthrough DJ" in 2012 by both MixMag and DJMag.[5] Her 2015 track "Rhymes", with Chris Lorenzo,[9] reached #13 in the UK in February 2015.[10]
Wants also runs a brand called "What Hannah Wants" which is designed to showcase DJs, and runs a yearly DJ competition, both of which are focused on DJs who do not produce music. "Just because you can make a great track, doesn't mean you can kill the crowd. So many DJs aren't getting a shot because they aren't making music."[4]
In September 2016, she was accused of plagiarism. According to a Facebook video posted by DJ Patrick Nazemi, Wants' then-new single "Found the Ground" (which was pulled by SoundCloud as a result of the accusation) was claimed to plagiarize the Boddika VIP version of the 2012 track "Mercy" by Boddika and Joy Orbison.[11] There is a video of Wants playing the same track in 2014 at a show in Leeds.[12] Wants responded to the allegation, stating, "Found The Ground" was made around 9 months ago and it’s no secret that the inspiration for the track was Joy O & Boddika – Mercy (VIP). I’ve been supporting Mercy (VIP) on radio, in mixtapes and in my DJ sets since it’s[sic] release and I went into the studio to create a piece of music that had a similar impact on the dancefloor. It was never intended to insult or offend."[13]
