Hennie Jacobs (born 20 June 1981) is a South African-born musician, songwriter and actor.
Early life
Jacobs was born and raised in Pretoria and is the youngest of three children (he has an older brother and sister). After matriculating from Waterkloof High School (Pretoria) in 1999, he studied a BComm (Hotel and Tourism Management) for a year at the University of Pretoria and stayed in the Sonop residence.
He then went on to study drama at the Tshwane University of Technology where he received his National Diploma in 2003. Whilst studying at TUT he performed in eighteen stage productions including Maid in the New South-Africa, a production by Clive Morris. In recognition of his work during this time, he received two awards for best actor and one award for best supporting actor.
Acting career
In December 2005, he worked along with Lizz Meiring in Karla en die Kersknol, and shared the stage with a number of well known South African names such as Elzabe Zietsman and Sarah Theron; music direction was done by Heidi Edeling. Later that year he appeared in Song vir Katryn 2 and Dryfsand, both SonneBlom productions.
During 2006, he appeared in a further Lizz Meiring production, Dames en Here. The production was performed at the Aardklop Arts festival, where he was nominated for best actor. Whilst at the arts festival he shared the music stage with Jannie du Toit, Christa Steyn, Richard van der Westhuizen, Lochner de Kock, Lize Beekman and Louis van Rensburg.
In 2007, Jacobs performed in the STOK VOORT! production at both the Klein Karoo National Arts Festival (KKNK) and the Volksblad Arts Festivals the other cast members of STOK VOORT! consisted of Leon Ecroignard, Wouter van de Venter and Jahn Beukes.
Also in 2007, he played the role of Deon in the South African feature film Poena is Koning, which premiered on 21 September.
At the Aardklop Arts Festival in 2007, Jacobs performed with Marissa Vosloo in the Idil Sheard translation of Athol Fugard's Valley Song (Lied van die Vallei), where the theatre critic Paul Boekkooi reviewed the play saying:
This (production) is old school theatre, idealistic and almost flawless – it makes the heart beat with condensed milk rather that blood.
In January 2008, Jacobs performed in Cape Town at the Suidoosterfees in the play Sy’t ’n Ding oor Liefde (My Thing over Love), by Alexandra Gersten with Deon Coetzee, Shareen Swart and Vuyelwa Booi. They also performed the play in April 2008 at the Weskus Kunstemakietie.
During 2009, at the KKNK, Volksblad and Aardklop festivals, Jacobs performed opposite Christo Davids in Athol Fugard's, Bloed Broers (The Blood Knot). The play was translated by Kobus J Kotze and directed by Zane Meas.
At the Aardklop festival in 2009 Jacobs also performed with Chris Vorster and Diaan Lawrenson in Vrydag is Skeidag. The play was written and also directed by Chris Vorster. In 2010 Marion Holm replaced Diaan Lawrenson (who was pregnant at the time) at the Volksblad Arts festival and the Centurion theatre. Diaan then rejoined cast after the birth of her daughter and performed at the Innibos festival in September 2010.
Jacobs also performed in the Chris Vorster production of Amper in 2011 with Ben Kruger. He then went on to assistant direct another Chris Voster production Buurtwag.
In 2012, Jacobs interpreted the role of Hally in the Athol Fugard masterpiece Master Harold and the Boys alongside Christo Davids (as Willie) and Terence Bridgette (as Sam) . The Afrikaans translation was done by Idil Sheard. The play was directed by Zane Meas and premiered at the Clover Aardklop National Arts Festival.
Later that year, Chris Vorster cast Jacobs in the cabaret, Die geval van die Mal Huisvrou with Karen Wessels which also premiered at the Clover Aardklop National Arts Festival.
In 2013, Jacobs played the lead role in the Nico Luwes, production Die Buite Egtelike Oupa which premiered at the Vryfees Festival in Bloemfontein. The sold out play was so successful that additional shows were added.
7de Laan
7de Laan is a South African Afrikaans soap opera with some English and Zulu dialogue in between. It features English subtitles. It started in 2000 and is broadcast evenings on SABC 2 from Monday to Friday at 18:27–19:00.
Since November 2006 Hennie Jacobs has been performing full-time in the Danie Odendaal Production 7de Laan, as the character Diederik Greyling.
Albums
He recorded his debut CD Chilli Confessions in September 2006. He never released this album, due to scheduling conflicts as he started working at 7de Laan as a full-time actor.
In August 2012 the record company Vonk Musiek released Jacobs's first commercial album Velcrohart. The music videos for the hit songs Soen and Net vir Nou was produced and directed by VPH Films.
On the 23 April 2014, the record company Vonk Musiek released Hennie Jacob's third first commercial album Dit is die land at the Centurion Theater. The music video for the hit songs Wolraadt Woltemade was also produced and directed by VPH Films.
Personal life
In November 2008 Hennie Jacobs and his fianceé Marissa Vosloo fell victim to a hijacker at a petrol station at Paulshof in northern Johannesburg. Nobody was injured.
On Saturday, 6 December 2008, Hennie Jacobs married Marissa Vosloo in an African setting in a Shebeen-themed wedding. Their first daughter Nua Audrey Esthe Jacobs was born on 22 January 2010. Their second daughter Tali Anah Ella Jacobs was born on 14 March 2013.
