Hotel Inglaterra is the oldest hotel in Cuba and one of the most classic hotels in Havana. It is located at Paseo del Prado #416 between San Rafael and San Miguel. It is set to reopen on January 31, 2017[1] following a renovation and restoration as Inglaterra, a Luxury Collection Hotel. Operated by Starwood Hotels, it will become the first US-managed hotel since the Cuban Revolution.
History
The hotel opened on December 23, 1875. The two-story structure was owned by Manuel López and Urban González[2] and was designed in the neoclassic style. A third floor was added in 1886.
Winston Churchill stayed there while visiting Cuba as a military observer during the Spanish-Cuban war in 1895.[3]
The Inglaterra was renovated again in 1901, with the addition of electricity, telephones, private bathrooms in each room, and a telegraph link. The fourth floor was added in 1914. In the 1930s, the hotel was owned and operated by the Solés family. The general manager was Candido Solés.[4]
On March 19, 2016, Starwood Hotels announced that the Inglaterra will become the first hotel managed by an American company in over 55 years when it joins The Luxury Collection division of Starwood in 2017, following renovations. Starwood received special authorization from the U.S. Treasury to operate the hotel.[5]
Appearances in books and movies
Hotel Inglaterra appears in the Elmore Leonard novel Cuba Libre.
